Tapia – Coello and Triay – Fernandez are proclaimed winners of Mexico Major Premier Padel

The GNP Mexico Major Premier Padel 2024 was the scene of memorable victories in both categories, highlighting the dominance of Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello, who were crowned champions after an impressive comeback, reaffirming their position as the undisputed leaders of world padel. In the women’s category, Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez reached a milestone by winning their first Major title as a couple, showing great determination and growth throughout the season.

Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello’s #1 comeback

Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia continue to consolidate their position as the most dominant couple in world padel after winning the GNP Mexico Major Premier Padel 2024 in Acapulco .

Their victory against Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk, seeded number 4, allowed them to win their third Major of the year, reaffirming their supremacy in the circuit and extending their impressive undefeated streak of 40 consecutive victories, which began last July.

The duel got off to a challenging start for the current FIP ranking leaders, as Yanguas and Stupaczuk took the first set 6-4 with an almost perfect game. However, Coello and Tapia showed their resilience and reaction capacity, dominating the second set with a convincing 6-1 and closing the match with a solid 6-2 in the final set. This comeback allowed them to lift another trophy in what is already a historic season.

After the match, Agustin Tapia reflected on the joint effort and highlighted the importance of fighting until the end: “I don’t know very well what we did, but the only thing I know is that we fought. Once again we showed that we are here to fight for everything. This tournament is very special for me, I think this week I realised that it’s my favourite of the year’.

For his part, Arturo Coello highlighted the excitement of competing in front of a passionate crowd and the mental strength of the team: “We started the match with a lot of complications against two players who were very plugged in. We said to ourselves: ‘We have to do something’, and although our physical condition was not 100%, we found other reasons to fight: family, effort, passion and the people who supported us from the stands. It was our duty to put on a good show.

This title not only reaffirms Coello and Tapia‘s dominance, but also demonstrates their ability to face challenges and stand firm in the most complicated moments. In a year full of success, their consistency and quality make them undisputed leaders in world padel.

First Major for Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez

Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez, number 2 seeds, have shown impressive determination to be crowned champions of the GNP Mexico Major Premier Padel after defeating Marta Ortega and Sofia Araújo, number 4 seeds, in a thrilling final that was decided in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 6-4).

This is their first Major title as a couple, consolidating their remarkable progress throughout the season. In addition, the Menorcan and the player from Madrid have won their first outdoor title, as the previous four had been won indoors.

As for this morning’s final, the match started with Ortega and Araújo taking the first set in a tight tiebreak. However, Triay and Fernandez reacted strongly, dominating the second set 6-1 and keeping their cool in the third set to seal victory with a 6-4 win.

After the final, Claudia Fernandez expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance: “I’m very, very happy for the week we’ve had. Although I started playing irregularly, I feel that my level was growing every day. I want to congratulate Gemma for how she fought in this match; I think we won it more because of our mentality than the game’.

For her part, Gemma Triay highlighted the duo’s evolution since their last participation in Acapulco: “We’ve improved a lot since March, when we lost in the quarters and didn’t manage to show our best level. Raising this title fills me with happiness’.
