There wasn’t just a title at stake in Vigo, but the number 1. Juan Lebron and Ale Galan were forced to defend their throne in their comeback against Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia.
The could that won the match would go out as number 1 this coming Monday, so the match was much more important than usual. For this reason, both pairings left everything on court, in a duel that will be one of the most memorable of the year.
The match started with the current dominators of the season stronger and more decisive. With a 3-0 start, they made their intentions clear in the match. That dazzling start helped them to close out the first set 6-3.
In the second set, the forces were even, but even so, the Spanish-Argentine duo managed to gain an advantage with a break, which paved the way to victory.
Tapia and Coello even had 5-4 and serve to close the match, but the situation weighed on the player from Valladolid, something strange this season, missing two consecutive balls that put the score at 5-5.
The Spaniard and the Argentine had another chance to break on the golden point, but Galan and Lebron saved the day. There were no breaks and both pairings faced the tie-break, in which the Spanish pair stepped up and took it to send the match to the third set.
The last episode of the match started with difficulties on Tapia and Coello’s serve. On their first serve, they held it after winning the golden point, but in the following game they gave up and conceded a break. However, in the next game, they broke back to level the scoreboard.
In the eighth game, however, the player from Valladolid and the player from Catamarca found a reward for their insistence and got a new break to take a 5-3 lead and serve. But, once again, with everything in their favour, they again made a mistake. Even so, they were presented with three options to close out the match, but they didn’t take advantage of them.
Galan and Lebron broke in the eleventh game and had their chance to take the match. They didn’t take advantage of it and the match ended up going to a tie-break. A tie-break that would give everyone goosebumps, and that would end with Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia lifting the title in Vigo and proclaiming themselves number 1.
With the results in Valladolid and Catamarca it was to be expected that, sooner or later, they would snatch the number 1 from Galán and Lebrón. Today’s result only adds to an incredible start to the season, having won every tournament on the World Padel Tour so far. Seven titles in seven tournaments played.
