It couldn’t be on their first attempt last year, but it was on their second. Local player Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría won the title in Reus after beating Ale Salazar and Gemma Triay in Sunday’s final.
The first Open 500 of the season put the reigning three-time champions of the South American tour to the test. Despite the category of the tournament, Ari Sanchez didn’t want to pass up the chance to take the win in front of her home fans. Her partner, Paula Josemaría, would do everything she could to help the player from Reus fulfil her dream.
So, the second seeds came out of the match determined. However, after four games, the score was 2-2. From then on, the match went wild and a succession of breaks put Ari and Paula ahead with a break. At 5-3 and on Salazar’s serve, the number 2 seeds broke again with a golden point to take the first set 6-3.
The second set started very well for Sanchez and Josemaria, taking a 3-1 lead. For the first time in several tournaments, Triay and Salalzar couldn’t find a solution. In this way, the local player and the player from Cáceres managed to close the match with a 6-2 win.
Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria won their second title of the season, after the one they won in Abu Dhabi. After a dip in results that their biggest rivals have taken advantage of, today’s victory has more value for them than the 500 they will add up this Monday in the Race.
